Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
